77abc radio Single Deck Blackjack — all the strategy in one deck
This version keeps the house edge at its lowest with just one deck of 52 cards. Understand the rules, make the right decisions, and play at the card table with confidence.
How a round works
Each round in Single Deck Blackjack begins by placing a bet. The dealer then deals two cards to each player and to themselves — both of the player's cards are face up, while one of the dealer's cards is face up and one is face down.
The goal is simple: score higher than the dealer without going over 21. Going over 21 is called a "bust" — the bet is lost immediately. An Ace counts as 1 or 11, face cards (King, Queen, Jack) all count as 10, and the remaining cards count at their face value.
The player looks at their hand and decides whether to take another card. Once all players have had their turn, the dealer reveals their hidden card and draws cards according to the rules, usually until reaching 17 or more. The player who scores higher than the dealer (within 21) wins.
Because only one deck is used, keeping track of the remaining cards is comparatively straightforward, which makes this version especially appealing to experienced players.
Main bet types and payouts
There are several types of bets in Single Deck Blackjack. Each one's payout is explained below — understanding them matters more than memorising the numbers.
Main Bet
The main goal is to beat the dealer. Winning pays equal to the bet amount (1:1). If both scores are equal it is a "push" — the bet is returned.
Blackjack
Getting an Ace and a 10-value card in the first two cards is a Blackjack. Payout is 3:2 — meaning a ৳100 bet wins ৳150.
Double Down
After seeing the first two cards, you can double your bet and take exactly one additional card. On a favourable hand this creates an opportunity for a large win.
Split
If you receive two cards of the same value, you can separate them to create two new hands. A separate bet is required for each hand.
Insurance
When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you have the option to place an additional insurance bet. If the dealer makes Blackjack the payout is 2:1; if not, the extra bet is lost.
House Edge — a basic overview
Among all versions of Blackjack, the single deck version has the potential for the lowest house edge — but this depends on the specific rules of the table. House edge means the percentage of each bet the casino retains on average over the long term.
In multi-deck games, the house edge can increase as the number of decks grows. With one deck, card distribution is naturally more predictable — so a skilled player who applies the right strategy can reduce this gap further.
Keep in mind, however, that the house edge is a mathematical average — the outcome of any individual round can fall outside it. Sometimes a good run comes, sometimes it does not. So practising correct decision-making is more useful than focusing on the numbers.
Remember: If the Blackjack payout is 6:5 instead of 3:2, the house edge increases significantly. Check the payout structure at the 77abc radio table before placing your bet.
Basic strategy for beginners
Basic strategy is a list of decisions built on mathematics — which hand to hit on, where to stand, when to double down. You do not need to memorise it; it comes with practice over time.
- Hard 16 or less: When the dealer's card is 7 through Ace, it is generally better to hit — even with the risk of busting, the dealer also has a good chance of winning with more cards.
- Hard 17 or more: Stand against any dealer card. The risk of taking an extra card is too high here.
- On 11 or 10 points: Consider doubling down when the dealer's card is weak (2–6). This is a profitable moment over the long term.
- A pair of Aces or 8s: Always split. A pair of Aces gives two separate opportunities; a pair of 8s makes 16, which is a weak hand.
- A pair of 10s: Do not split. 20 is a strong hand — splitting it increases the risk.
- Insurance: Basic strategy generally advises against taking insurance, as it is not profitable over the long term.

About soft hands
When an Ace counts as 11 to form a hand, it is called a "soft hand". For example, Ace + 6 = Soft 17. Hitting on this hand carries less risk of busting, because the Ace can become 1 if needed.
On Soft 17, make your decision based on the dealer's card — if the dealer is weak (2–6) you may consider doubling down.
If you have Soft 19 or 20, generally stand — it is already a strong hand.
